Children at Mary's Place

"All too often, children are the 'forgotten grievers', and so through the vision and generosity of Carmon Community Funeral Homes, Mary's Place was created as a safe environment where children and families can share emotions and feeling that they often can't express anyplace else. At the same time, they learn that they are not alone and that their feelings and responses are normal."

Mary Keane, RN, MA, OCN
Founding Director

Principles

Mary's Place operates under the principles of the Dougy Center, the first center for grieving children and families in the United States, which was founded in Portland, Oregon by Beverly Chappell in 1982.

  • Grief is a natural reaction to death for children as well as adults.
  • Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal oneself.
  • The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual.
  • Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process.

Mary's Place, a nonprofit Center for Grieving Children and Families, was established in 1996 by the Carmon Family. The purpose is to provide a trusting atmosphere for children and teens who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or significant person. Through age-related self-help groups, consultation and grief education, a safe place is provided to grieve and to heal.

Staff/Volunteers

Under the guidance of a program directer , the groups are facilitated by volunteers who undergo training and a background check, and who receive ongoing supervision and support.

There is a Board of Directors which meets regularly to support the mission of Mary's Place and to assist with fund raising and community activities.
